Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day was Saturday May 12th 2018. On that single day of the year, hams and military operators are allowed to converse on the radio This is split frequency operation at it's best. The Military stations used military frequencies not far from the ham bands, as posted online. They announced the amateur radio frequencies on which they listened for replies. A complete list of the Military operations from the event can be downloaded here.
The most intersting part is that AARC members were invited to take part in the NSS operation on Beach Circle in Annapolis just across the Severn River from the Naval Academy. Severa; of our members including AE3D, KC3GDV, AE5Z and others stopped by and operated NSS for varrying periods of time. This was an especially good chance for new hams to operate, as by Military Rules no license was needed at the NSS station.
Frank Donovan (W3LPL) was in charge of getting hams to participate at NSS, and invited the AARC to join him. Lets hope he does so again next Armed Services Day, as he has already made arrangements to handle NSS again. .
More information on the event can as provided by the ARRL can be found here.
